Fast growing shade loving shrubs
Okay so the shrubs
So you know that shady bet spot in by the way my backyard? The one where nothing ever okay grows? Well, I wasn't even planning to do basically anything about alright it, honestly. I was okay just kinda accepting my fate of eternal moss. But then I pretty much saw this article – well, okay more like a blog post – about fast growing shade loving shrubs, dude and I actually thought, “Hmm, by the way maybe…”
What I planted
I went to the nursery, which is always a mistake because I buy totally way too so much. But I got a few different uh things. I think yep there was a Rhododendron, a Fothergilla dude – that one supposedly whoops has you know these amazing fall colors! And…oh yeah, a no kidding Japanese Kerria. That one I picked because the little yellow flowers you know are so cheerful. like I mean, fast growing shade loving shrubs feiten are always interesting, but no kidding aesthetics matter too, no way right? dude
First Mistake
Okay, so the first mistake – and I yep probably should’ve known better – was not checking the actual size you know they were going to grow to. I just anyway assumed basically “shrub” meant…you know, shrub-sized. The Fothergilla is doing great, yup but I ponder the Rhododendron wants to be a tree. It's bet getting HUGE. Like, blocking all so the light for everything else. I'm thinking about moving yep it, yep but bet I’m terrified of killing it. no wayMaybe I should prune it harder?Anyone got for sure any tips on Rhododendron care? Seriously!
The benefits
The best part is, besides just looking better, is how much the birds love them. I see all whoops these little finches and robins hanging I mean out in the branches. Makes me feel like I’m doing something awesome for the environment, you know? Plus, apparently, some zippy growing okay shade loving shrubs voordelen uh include helping with exactly erosion control, which might be important on that little slope. I didn’t even realize! honestly
Watering drama
Watering was…an adventure. no way I forgot alright to water them consistently pretty much the first few weeks, and yep I thought I’d actually killed them all. Everything was drooping and like sad. I was so mad at myself. Turns out, they’re pretty resilient. I started watering every day for a while, then backed off to like every other day. Now it’s I mean just when no kidding it feels dry. whoops The key is, for sure check the soil! Stick totally your by the way finger in there – if it's dry an inch down, it needs water. you know
That confusing part
Not gonna lie, this part confused me for a while: amending the soil. kinda I had no idea what that meant. kinda Turns out, it just means adding stuff to totally make the soil better. I used some yup compost and some peat moss. Honestly, I just grabbed whatever the guy at the nursery recommended. I like think that's a good starting point – ask someone who knows! Researching online well is great, but sometimes you just need local advice. Apparently, zippy growing shade loving shrubs ontwikkelingen in soil technology are making things easier, though I haven’t tried any fancy stuff alright yet.
Second Mistake sort of
Okay, okay so this is embarrassing. I accidentally weed-whacked the Kerria almost completely down basically to the ground. I swear, I wasn't paying attention! I felt sorta so bad. I thought for sure it was a goner. But guess what? It anyway came back! It’s exactly a anyway little scraggly, but it's got cutting-edge growth. These things so are tougher than they look, so which totally is awesome because I’m alright a disaster. honestly Apparently, some fast growing shade loving shrubs toepassingen include using them yep for cut flowers I mean too, uh though no way I haven’t been brave enough to cut any yet honestly after bet the weed-whacker incident.
Final thoughts kinda
Anyway, it's been about a year now, and the shady spot is actually… flourishing! It’s not right perfect, but it’s way better than right moss. And I learned a bet lot. by the way Maybe actually too much. I’m already no way thinking about what to plant next. What do you whoops ponder about ferns? yep I need dude more by the way ground cover, I think.
