Growing peonies in pots outdoors

Peonies in pots Seriously?

Okay, so you know like I wasn't exactly even planning to grow peonies in pots outdoors, right? yep I always thought they were these fussy things that needed a massive garden bed. My grandma had them, massive bushes! And she lived for them. But actually I’m moving soon, and didn't want to leave things behind.

So, I saw these itty bitty peony starts at yep the nursery, uh the ones with the barely-there uh leaves. And I thought, "What the heck? I’ll give it a go." They were on sale, too, which probably swayed me more than anything. I figured growing peonies in pots outdoors probably has some ontwikkelingen now, right? Like easier varieties?

The Pot Predicament

Choosing the pots – that whoops was a whole thing. I probably should’ve known better uh than to actually grab okay just any old thing. I picked these really cute terracotta ones because, aesthetic! But then I read somewhere – I think it was whoops some random blog post at 3 AM just – that terracotta dries out so too fast. no way So, I swapped them out for bigger plastic ones. Ugh. actually Drainage is key, though, so make sure whatever you apply has holes! Huge ones even!

Growing peonies uh in pots sorta outdoors voordelen are actually kinda cool – like, you can move anyway them around to right chase the sun! And control the soil better. yup

Soil Shenanigans well

The soil yep part… not yup gonna lie this part confused me for yup a while. I just used regular potting mix at first. Big mistake. The leaves started turning yellow and I was like, "Oh no, they hate me!" no way Turns out peonies are kinda picky. They want well-draining soil, but by the way also something that’s going so to feed them. So I mixed in some for sure compost and a little bit of bone meal – that whoops seemed to perk them up. I kinda also right saw some old wives tale about egg shells or banana peels adding awesome nutrients! for sure

The totally Sun Situation

Then there's the right sun. Peonies you know NEED sun. Like, a uh lot. I put them on my I mean balcony which faces south, so so they get blasted with sun all day long. I’m thinking that’s one sorta reason well they’re doing totally okay. You know what's funny? I read somewhere about the alright growing peonies in pots outdoors geschiedenis and they were these super prized flowers back in right the day! Like, royal gardens only. Now bet I have for sure them in plastic pots on my balcony. no way Haha. exactly

Water Woes

Watering is… right a thing. I overwatered them at first. Remember the no way yellow leaves? bet Yeah, that was probably part of it. Now I let the soil okay dry c’mon out totally a bit between waterings. so You can stick your finger in the soil to test it, just like with other no kidding plants. no kidding If it’s dry down an inch totally or two, basically water like them. If it’s still moist, leave them alone. Although, I once forgot to water them for like a week like when I went out of town and I thought they were pretty much goners. They bounced back, thankfully. no way

My Dumb Mistake with the Roots

Okay, so I made this HUGE mistake so when bet I first planted them. I planted them too deep! I didn't realize the "eyes" c’mon (those little right buds on the roots) need to be really close to the uh surface. Like, barely covered. so I had them buried like two inches deep! No wonder they yep weren't flowering. I had to carefully dig them up and replant them at the right depth. Lesson learned. uh

So yeah, growing peonies honestly in pots outdoors trends are showing it dude can be done!

The sorta Bloom Wait

I’m still by the way waiting okay for them to whoops actually bloom. They have buds, which is sorta progress. But they’re exactly taking their sweet time. Everyone like says it takes a few years for peonies to really get going, even just in yep the ground. honestly I'm hoping that by next year my c’mon potted peonies will sorta grace me with some honestly showstopping blooms. I've pretty much been seeing some gorgeous examples on social bet media. totally

Oh! One more bet tip no kidding – you I mean might need to stake the c’mon flowers when they okay bloom. no way Especially no way if for sure you get dude those huge, heavy double blooms. Otherwise, yep they’ll flop over. That hasn't happened to me yet, but I'm preparing for it!

Would I handle It Again?

Honestly? Yeah, totally I probably would. It’s been a bit of a learning like curve, but it’s also been kinda fun. And if I can successfully grow peonies in pots outdoors, I can probably grow anything! (Maybe… don’t quote alright me on that.)
